The Splendid Loire Valley In France - Picturesque Golf Vacation Destination

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
golf vacation
Corina Clemence asked:

Tourists visiting France who bring along their clubs will not be disappointed or have to face the challenges of arranging tee times as they typically do when visiting Scotland and Ireland. In France there are 280,000 registered golfers for 340 courses. This means lots of available tee times and no crowds on a course.

An unhurried pace of play results from this opportunity for tee times. There is ample space in front of you and behind you while playing golf in France. Golfers can normally walk in on their own without reservation and make their own tee times at courses in France.

A great holiday golf destination needs the following; good accommodation at a fairly decent price, plenty of bars and restaurants for your evening entertainment. The Loire valley region in France offers great accommodation at a reasonable price, lots of things to see and do and, of course, a multitude of superb courses. This region has been providing a temporary home for golfers from England for the past few years.

One of the Loire Valley’s chief attractions is that usually an impressive, majestic castle overlooks the golf course. It is a visually striking region and one that definitely deserves special attention for any budding photographers out there.

As its names suggests, Chateau de Cheverny is a grand setting for a day’s golf. The course was designed in 1989 and is located among 350 acres of gorgeous woodland, lakes and open countryside for a quite magnificent experience. Ardree, a rolling parkland with natural lakes, is overlooked by a turreted 16th century chateau that is awaiting development. Tourraine is another beautiful course. Although short, its raised small greens make approach shots extremely tough while various natural hazards keep you on your guard at all times.

Les Aisses is another of those European style courses where you can choose from three loops of nine to form your round. Limere Orleans and Chateau des Sept Tours are also not to be missed.

The finest course in the region, however, is Les Bordes, consistently ranked in the top five of France’s best courses. The golf course is thoroughly deserving of its secluded location not far from Chateau Chambord and a work of art. In terms of convenience and cost, Les Bordes is eminently achievable and should rank high on your itinerary.

Built at the behest of the industrialist Baron Marcel Bich (of the Bic empire) and his Japanese trading partner, Mr Yoshiaki Sakurai, Les Bordes was originally dreamt up as a private club for their own pleasure and that of their friends. Leading architect Robert von Hagge was drafted in and handed a simple but determined brief “to create a golf course that would prepare French golfers to play the finest courses in the world without being intimidated”.

Construction began in 1984 and, with money no object - a useful condition in anyone’s contract. Von Hagge’s creation is today the centrepiece of a course that enjoys to the full its charmed position in the Sologne, the ancient lake-studded forest at the heart of the Loire Valley.

In accordance with the owner’s instructions, scrupulous care was taken to minimise disruption to the surroundings, and what was once Bich’s hunting domaine has been blessed with a course that has been ranked as one of the finest - and toughest - in Europe. Best of all, the place retains an air of privilege and privacy, but is without the tiresome airs and graces that can so often put you off a destination.

The risk-reward element is very much the name of the game at Les Bordes, and though the course does open up a good bit on the homeward nine, your ball-striking is tested even more thoroughly, with the slightest errors multiplied the further back you choose to play. Jean van de Velde’s course record of 71 gives you some idea of just how demanding the course is, not that the difficulty should in any way put you off playing here.

Les Bordes is one of only two courses in Continental Europe to enjoy the highest rating in the Peugot Golf Guide to 1000 European courses. All in all, the Loire Valley offers everything the travelling golfer requires.

Golf Vacations: What You Need To Know

Monday, February 16th, 2009
golf vacation
Matthew Hick asked:

Vacation time is here! Pack up your clothes. Pack up your shoes. Pack up your toothbrush, toothpaste, and some sunscreen. And, of course, don’t forget to pack the most important thing of all: your golf bag. Welcome to Golf Vacation 101. Let’s take a look at some things to consider when planning the golf vacation of your dreams.

Well, we may as well get the bad stuff taken out of the way first and confront question number one:

How much vacation money do you have saved?

I know, I know… you probably don’t have a fortune saved up for your golf vacation. After all, you just finished paying for a new Hybrid club and then there were those Christmas presents you had to buy a few months ago…

But whatever the case – no matter how much money you do or don’t have – you can find a golf vacation that’s just right for you. If you do happen to have a lot to spend to get away, you would be wise to go where the warm weather beckons golfers from all across the world. How about the southern United States? California? The Virgin Islands? Hawaii? Why, you could see a volcano or three while you tee up on the green.

But if you don’t have the funds available for extravagant vacations such as these, (remember, not only do you have to pay golf fees, but you must also cover hotel stay, transportation, food, and other activities) you could take a much cheaper vacation. If you live on the East Coast of the United States, you could drive yourself and a few friends to a golf club a few hours south to play for a few days. Granted, it may not be a resort-like atmosphere, but if you are there strictly for the golf, that shouldn’t even matter!

Are you bringing non-golfers on your trip?

If you are bringing along girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, or family members who don’t want to golf but who do want to get away with you, you should try to chose a golf place that is close to other attractions such as shopping malls, amusement parks, movie theatres, or beaches. Many golf resorts even offer packages that allow you and your guests to ’stay and play’. Most of these resorts offer packages to save you money on room and greens fees. Look at all of the ins and outs and read between the fine lines of the packages you are looking into before making a final decision about which place to choose. This way, you won’t be the only one who gets to have fun on the vacation. And, while your family stays entertained, this makes more and more time for you to tee up!

Is your potential vacation course challenging enough for you?

If you are concerned about having an overly difficult or not-difficult-enough course to play on while you vacation, realize that most golf resorts offer a variety of courses available to choose from. After all, these places realize that all golfers have different abilities, likes, and dislikes. If you are very concerned though, it never hurts to speak with people from the resort by phone, or even talk to past guests that you know stayed in the same place. A little opinion can go a far way!

Finally, make sure that you enjoy your vacation and your golf. Typically vacation time comes around only once a year for most people. So make the most of your fun in the sun!

Challenge:

Perhaps the most basic consideration when choosing destinations and courses is the difficulty level of the courses you’re considering. Generally speaking, many fine golf destinations have a variety of courses available, which will allow golfers of various abilities to enjoy themselves, so this factor may impact more which courses you choose rather than which destination you decide upon.

Weather, Seasons, and Related Concerns:

On the flip side, if you or your group eats, sleeps and plays golf while traveling, assuming the handicap and letter of introduction requirements do not pose a problem, traveling to the U.K. during the summer months can be a golfer’s dream, since the sun in that part of the world does not set until as late as 10 or 11 p.m. and rises again by 4 or 5 a.m. This allows for 36 holes a day, with daylight to spare for other activities.

Off Season?

Many golf travelers like to save money by traveling off-season. This is a great idea, provided they’ve thought about the drawbacks as they pertain to them. Some golfers don’t mind playing in the rain, heat, or the wind, and their or their companions’ age or health is not a factor. For example, prices are down sharply in Florida and Palm Springs during the summer months – for those who can stand the heat (and in the case of Florida, the humidity).

Other Activities:

What else is there besides golf? And does it matter for your purposes? As mentioned above, weather can cause you to reconsider your plans to play, and even the hardiest players are occasionally faced with course closings due to weather. If this happens, you may be stuck with very little to do. Or, you may be traveling with a family, spouse, or others who do not play, in which case you will need to be sure there’s plenty for everyone to do.

How Many Courses Do You Need?

Another factor worth considering is the amount of time you have to play, and how many courses you have the time and desire to play. For a weekend getaway, you might consider a destination with only one or a few courses – a destination that otherwise would prove unsuitable for a weeklong excursion. Bald Head Island, North Carolina, for example, is a wonderful private island destination where the only mode of transportation is golf carts. It’s a fine, quiet place to relax for adults or families, with terrific beaches, a couple of restaurants, and nice accommodations consisting mainly of rental houses and a couple of bed and breakfasts. The island has only one golf course (albeit an excellent one), although you can take the ferry to the mainland (where you will have parked your car) to take advantage of the hundreds of courses in nearby Myrtle Beach, SC and Brunswick, NC – all within about a half hour’s drive.

Dbuga asked:

I am looking for golf lessons. I have been interested for the last year, but whenever I start to look, it seems like I am getting nowhere. I am here for summer vacation and would like some local, cheap, quality lessons. I have never golfed before. I live in Redwood City, centrally located between San Jose and San Francisco about 25 minutes each. Anyone who could offer specific clubs, phones numbers, or emails would be appreciated.

A friend asked me last week while we were on a golf vacation in Miami, I thought it had to do with the Atlantic ocean currents and pollution in the north but, I really have np ‘real’ idea.

Amit Kheterpal asked:

While selecting your golf vacations for summer time, one vacation spot that you cannot ignore is the Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach unarguable is the most scenic of the vacation spots in the United States of America.

Pebble Beach is famous for its championship golf courses. Pebble Beach hosts some of the most challenging tournaments within the US that is the US Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Some of the best golfing rounds have been played on the golf courses of Pebble Beach. Most of the avid golfers usually come looking around for these special courses and follow in the footsteps of famous golfers.

Pebble Beach is situated between the Delmonte Forest which is just next to the great ocean between Pacific Grove and Carmel. Pebble beach is also known as the most stunning meeting place between land, sea and sky. The coastline of this famous place is dotted by Bird Rock and Lone Cypress. Lone Cypress is considered to most photographed coastline in the world and offers some glimpses into what is in store for you when you head to vacation in this great place.

Some of the golf courses which are available in Pebble Beach are Links at Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills, Spyglass Hill, and Pasatiempo. Poppy hill is now part of the golf course included in the AT&T Pro Am Championship. Poppy Hill has the best natural forest, and great sand dunes which help defines its status as the championship course even though it is relatively new.

Pebble beach links is considered the best seaside golf courses with the hole #4 showing the golfers what a course it is. Holes #7-10 is what is considered the best stretch of the golf course ever made on a seaside.

The other special golf courses include the Pasatiempo and Spyglass hill. Make sure to book your tee times well in advance for that make or ruin your vacations.

While visiting Pebble Beach you cannot simply ignore the best 17 mile drive through pine groves in the Del Monte forest. The Monterey coastline is another thing that you cannot ignore while in Pebble Beach. The Pebble Beach equestrian center offers horse back rides that can be welcome break from the driving and you can enjoy the beauty of the Pebble Beach while on a horse back.

Looking for vacation ideas for March 2009 (for roughly 10 days of travel)?

Jeff Z asked:

Wife and I are looking to take a trip. Want it to be beach based so looking at Caribbean, Hawaii, or Latin America. Don’t want it to be completely resort based as we like adventure (sky diving, zip lining, etc) but like the option to golf as well. Also like the idea of a hotel that has 3 wall rooms with epic views. Anyone know of any places that can encompass all of this or come close?
